My Specialism

For this year of the course, I would like to focus of two main areas of media production that will potentially help me reach the job specialism that I wish to achieve. These are film production (directory and producing) and graphic design (mostly photoshop and drawing).

Directing:
Directing is to have control over the operations in a business (specifically film), a director guides, instructs and oversees the performance or a production. Supervision, communication, motivation and leadership are key skills that someone would need to pursue being a director.

Producing:
A producer can work on the pre-production, production and aspects of the post-production of a movie. They work alongside the directs, actors and editors in most cases - and can also be responsible for marketing a movie. Creativity, financial awareness, time-management, monitoring and critical thinking.

Photoshop:
Loosely, I would like to do anything photoshop based. More specifically, I enjoy making magazine and newspaper covers, I would like to improve on my photoshop skills so that they are more refined and I can achieve more eye-catching edits. To achieve this I will have to teach myself more about the software, as well as more about the conventions of newspapers and magazines.

Illustration:
This is my least favourite option of these four, and will most likely be the least like specialism that I will pursue. Illustration can be in multiple forms,

At the end of this year I aim so either have achieved these traits in my work or have experience with all of these. To explore my potential specialisms, I will include aspects of them in my pre-production, production and post-production of this project. For example, photoshop work can help me make graphic cards, practicing my directing means I can guide crew members, all of my pre-production documents will guide the crew and I in creating a convincing game show.

Five targets that would help me in achieving one of my chosen specialisms would be:

  1. Learn shortcuts, practice and discover new skills in photoshop that will help me apply them to future edits.
  2. Research skills that directors have and need, as well as key terminology directors use on set.
  3. Research jobs related to illustration as I have not looked at these yet.
  4. Post-production (editing) is not my strong point, so I will research and practice editing techniques for audio and visual related instances.
  5. Aim to be more communicative with others while working with them to boost my communication skills for directing

Looking back at the previous year, I feel that I need to go into more detail in my work, and be less repetitive - paragraphs including information that arise more than once. Something I need to do a lot more is include media terminology in my writing and evaluations, especially audience theories as these are important to back up my demographic.
