Idea

Existing Show One:

From The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon's game called Russian Roulette, where there is a carton of eggs - eight hard boiled and four raw. The aim of the game is to pick as many hard boiled eggs as possible, the first person to crack two raw eggs over their head loses.

Multi-Camera:

There are four cameras altogether in this game show. There is a crane shot, close up of the eggs on table, all of the other shots apply to the 180° rule- one wide shot on the table, the guest and the host. Two mid shots, over the shoulder of the guest looking at the host and similarly with an over the shoulder shot of the host.

Guessing The Target Demographic:

My guess of the target demographic for Jimmy Fallon's 'The Tonight Show' is 16-30 year old's. More specifically:

Age: 16-30
Gender: female/male
Country: America
Job/Income: could be part time or full time, but as the audience is young there could be a possibility that they're still in some sort of education
Ethnicity: White American
Race: White

Actual Target Audience:

The target audience for The Tonight Show is 18-49 year old's. This is because the YouTube videos of the show where reaching more of their demographic than any cable network that it was broadcast on.

Existing Show Two:

8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, working out problems such as maths, anagrams and creating the longest word from nine random letters.

Multi-Camera:

After watching this episode through a few times, I found that there is at least six cameras in this production. There is a crane shot at the beginning of the episode of most of the set. The rest of the cameras focus on the guests (usually Sean Loch and Jon Richardson), the host (Jimmy Carr) and co-host (Rachel Riley).

Guessing The Target Demographic:

I think the target audience for 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, originally, was 35-50 year old's. I think this series was supposed to aim at older people due to its Mathematics and English related quizzes.

Age: 35-50
Gender: female
Country: England
Job/Income: teachers - £26,000+
Ethnicity: White British
Race: White

Actual Target Demographic:

The target demographic for Countdown has in act changed from people aged 55+ to people between the ages 16 and 24 years old.

Existing Show Three:

This last idea is to have a group of friends complete three tasks to gain points, the person with the most points gets a trophy and some sweets. The aim of the game is to complete the task in the quickest time, whoever completes it the fastest wins.

Multi-Camera:

In this first episode of GO! there is only one camera being used, however, in other episodes there are more cameras (iPhones) recording different people's POV's . There is also screen recordings of the games that they are playing. If I was to do this idea, I would use multiple cameras to get shots of the guests and the activities they are doing - as well as this, the cameras would be locked off in the positions I want them to be so that a camera man isn't following them around (unlike in the video example).

Guessing The Target Demographic:

GO! is a YouTube game series made by the popular channel Achievement Hunter (which is owned by Rooster Teeth, the people in this video also own the Lets Play channel). As it is a YouTube weekly uploaded video by a popular gaming channel, I think the target audience here is 14-23 year-old's.

Age: 14-23
Gender: male
Country: America
Job/Income: unemployed or part-time students, £1,000-£3,000
Ethnicity: White American
Race: White

Actual Target Demographic:
The actual target audience for GO! is teenagers and young adults between the ages 10-25, although there is no documents stating this (due to the game being broadcasted solely on YouTube, the team has stated in a few videos that their primary audience are 10-15 year-old's, however, from watching and commenting on their videos, I know that there is also young adults that choose to watch this channel - leaving me to conclude that their audience is comprised of young teens and young adults.

Own Idea One:

My first idea is to follow a similar narrative of Achievement Hunter's GO! game. I would like to keep the idea of the game, the person to complete a given task the fastest gets a point, and the person with the most points at the end of the game gets a prize (for example, I buy them whatever they want from McDonalds or something). However, I will make it a multi-camera production by setting it up similar to a game show - showing the set, the hosts and the guests, whilst also showing the activities the guests are taking part in.

This is the idea that I will be creating into a multi-camera production. I have chosen this idea as it interests me the most out of my three ideas, it is also a idea that I think is appropriate to my current skills and will end up looking the best out of the three potential productions.

Opening Sequences for Chosen Idea:

  • My idea is to have a group of people playing an intense card game, I will film the opening sequence prior to the actual 'live' performance and add the graphics in Adobe Premier Pro. I would like the intro sequence to be in black and white as this will indicate to my audience that it is the start of the live performance.
  • Create a animated graphical introduction using assets that I have created, these assets will align to display the logo for my production and then fade into the live piece - this idea came from looking at the Off Topic introduction as seen in my research
  • Combining the two ideas above, my last choice is to have a filmed introduction that ends with a graphic animation which then fades into the live piece
My opening sequence ideas relate to my analysis into the Off Topic YouTube game show as I have analysed their introduction and taken it into consideration to create my own. My first idea (the black and white card game) is the one that I will be creating for my production. I feel that this idea matches my game show the same way Off Topic’s introduction fits the mise-en-scene of their set - the introduction shows a pint of beer being poured and then fades to the set which is a bar, the introduction and the set relate to each other. This is what I am aiming to achieve in my production. I will achieve this by having the introduction be a recording of a card game taking place, and the first game that the guests will play will be: who can create the tallest house of cards. This directly connects my introduction to one of the activities I will ask my guests to do. To further the connections, I will plan to create a logo that has a playing card behind the game show title.

How does my chosen idea link to my choice of specialism(s)?
Creating this idea would link to my specialism in producing, directing and photoshop related jobs. The idea of graphics cards came from popular live-streamers that I have analysed in my research, they use their own design depending on the information they want to share - I have created some of my own, as seen in my planning page, that follow the guidelines provided to me by somewhat professional, popular live-streamers. Researching into multi-camera productions will help me to better direct the crew that I will me employing for a day to create my final piece, it will also allow me during my post-production process to edit the multi-camera footage into a convincing final piece.

Own Idea Two:

My second idea is to follow the concept of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, using the mathematics and English brain games on a panel of guests.

Target Demographic:

Age: 23-35
Gender: female
Country: England - this is where Countdown is filmed (specifically Leeds Studio) so it is more likely to be broadcast here.
Job/Income: English or Maths teachers - £22,900 for English teachers and £44,200 for maths teachers (although this may vary nearer to London and may also vary in different schools)
Ethnicity: White British
Race: White

Own Idea Three:

My final idea is to make a short musical, most likely a inspirational or educational type musical.

Target Demographic:

Age: for this idea, there is potentially two areas in which I can aim this media text at, these are 14-19 year-old's and 30-50 year-old's. This is because it is an educational based musical which means that it will be shown to young minds in education, but older demographics may also enjoy it because musicals are more timely entertainment
Gender: Female
Country: England
Job/Income: student or music teacher, £4,000 (student) - £50,000 (teacher)
Ethnicity: White British
Race: White

  1. Holly. Some of this page needs to be moved to the research page... target demographic... as this is secondary. Also gather your primary research now...
